GALVESTON — A vessel worker alleges he did not receive adequate medical care after being struck in the chest by a jack assembly that came loose.

Shane D. Hickey filed a complaint Sept. 9 in Galveston County District Court against Oceaneering Mobile Workforce LLC and Oceaneering International, Inc., alleging negligence.

According to his complaint, Hickey was working for the defendants on Sept. 12, 2020, aboard the Rem Saltire offshore supply vessel. He claims he and other crew members were removing the docking head sheave and pins. Hickey further claims as he was tying the rope that was a few inches away from the pressurized jack assembly, a welded nut broke free from the pin which caused the jack to shoot towards him and strike him in the chest. He alleges he suffered debilitating injuries and medical conditions to his heart which required surgery as well as injury to his chest, back, neck and shoulder.

Hickey further alleges the defendants failed to arrange for his prompt and adequate medical attention and did not provide a safe work environment. He also claims the defendants were negligent for failing to provide adequate safety equipment and for failing to release the pressure on the jack assembly or have an adequate weld on the jack assembly. Hickey alleges the defendants were also negligent for failing to properly train and supervise the crew.

Hickey seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Matthew Shaffer and Laura De La Cruz of Schechter, Shaffer & Harris LLP in Houston.
