GALVESTON — A river cruise deckhand alleges she suffered fractures to her leg after a fellow crew member negligently operated a deck crane.

Stacy Evans filed a complaint June 12 in Galveston County District Court against American Queen Steamboat Operating Company LLC alleging Jones Act negligence and other claims.

Evans, according to her complaint, was hired to work as a deckhand on the  defendant's river cruise boat the American Empress. She alleges that while working on the boat on July 29, 2022, and trying to secure the gangway, a fellow crew member who was operating a deck crane, caused the gangway to slam into her and fracture her right leg.

She further alleges the defendant failed to provide her with a safe workplace or adequate equipment to safely perform her job duties. Evans claims the defendant also operated the vessel without an adequate crew or proper crew training. She alleges she suffered disfigurement, lost wages and incurred medical treatment expenses as a result of the defendant's negligence.

Evans seeks monetary relief of more than $250,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Paxton Crew of The Crew Law Firm PC in League City.
