In a dramatic legal showdown, an individual has taken on a major international airline over a series of mishaps that allegedly resulted in significant personal and financial distress. On November 1, 2024, Chukwuemeka Anyanwu filed a complaint against Air France, also known as Société Air France, S.A., in the District Court of Harris County, Texas. The lawsuit accuses the airline of negligence, breach of contract, and conversion following a troubling travel experience.
The case stems from events that unfolded during Anyanwu's trip to Greece on August 24, 2024. According to the complaint, Anyanwu flew with Air France and its partner KLM but faced immediate issues upon arrival when his checked baggage failed to appear. This inconvenience reportedly lasted for three days, forcing him to incur additional expenses. The troubles compounded on his return journey when one of his bags went missing en route from Paris to Houston and was later returned severely damaged with most items missing. Alarmingly, the bag contained belongings from other passengers—a situation raising serious security concerns.
Anyanwu's legal team argues that Air France had a duty to handle luggage with care and failed egregiously in this responsibility. "Defendant breached this duty by negligently failing to ensure the safe and timely delivery of Plaintiff's luggage," reads the petition. The plaintiff asserts that these failures led directly to financial losses and emotional distress. Furthermore, Anyanwu claims Air France violated their contractual agreement by not delivering his belongings intact or promptly.
The lawsuit outlines specific damages amounting to $58,971.65 for lost property including luxury items such as colognes, designer shoes, jewelry from Van Cleef & Arpels, and a Dior Saddle Bag—items totaling nearly $40,000 alone. Additionally, it seeks compensation for mental anguish valued at $14,500 and expenses incurred due to delays estimated at $4,800.
In seeking justice through the court system, Anyanwu requests not only actual damages but also exemplary damages citing gross negligence on part of Air France under Chapter 41 of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code. His legal representation has also demanded reasonable attorney’s fees under Sections 37.009 and 38.001 of the same code.
Represented by Carolyn Okorafor from Co & Co Attorneys At Law based in Houston Texas—known for her expertise in handling complex litigation matters—Anyanwu is pushing for a jury trial hoping for a favorable judgment against one of Europe's largest airlines.
This case is being overseen by Judge Tianni Williams under Case ID 2024-76772 in Harris County's 11th Judicial District Court.
