Janie Edwards has taken legal action against two corporate entities, alleging negligence after suffering injuries on their premises. The complaint was filed by Edwards in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, on November 7, 2024, naming Redstone Group LLC and Redstone Inc. as defendants.
The lawsuit stems from an incident that occurred on March 17, 2023, when Edwards experienced a fall within the premises owned or operated by the defendants at 109 North Post Oak Lane in Houston. According to the petition, Edwards was informed that the elevator was out of service and had to use the stairs. During her descent, a power outage plunged the stairwell into darkness without any backup lighting or assistance from personnel. This led to her falling and sustaining injuries to her knee and other parts of her body.
Edwards accuses Redstone Group LLC and Redstone Inc. of creating an unreasonably dangerous condition due to their failure to maintain proper lighting in the stairwell. The plaintiff claims that this negligence directly resulted in her injuries. "Defendants knew or should have known that the stairwell without light created an unreasonably dangerous condition," states the petition. The complaint further asserts that there was no adequate warning provided about this hazardous situation nor any effort made to rectify it.
In terms of damages, Edwards is seeking compensation for physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, medical expenses (both past and future), disfigurement, physical impairment, and loss of earning capacity. Her attorney has indicated that these damages exceed $1 million.
Represented by Adam J. Rosenfeld from Schechter, Shaffer & Harris L.L.P., Janie Edwards demands a jury trial for this case. She requests judgment against both defendants jointly and severally for amounts exceeding the court's jurisdictional limits along with pre-judgment and post-judgment interest as well as court costs.
The case is presided over by Judge Marilyn Burgess in Harris County District Court under Case ID: 2024-78615.
