Fox Rothschild congratulates John J. Kappel on joining a select group of attorneys who have earned two certifications from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS).

Already board certified as a specialist in Family Law since 2020, Kappel has now earned board certification by TBLS in Civil Appellate Law. Fewer than 1 percent of Texas lawyers are Double Board Certified.

To earn certification in Civil Appellate Law, lawyers must complete 60 hours of appellate course work and pass a comprehensive six-hour exam. They must also demonstrate experience in 12 significant appeals and that appellate work accounts for at least 25 percent of their practice.

“John’s recognized depth of knowledge and experience in appellate law is a tremendous boon to our growing national appellate team,” said Matthew Nis Leerberg, nationwide Co-Chair of Fox’s Appellate Practice. “Being double board certified is an especially impressive credential considering the rigorous standards Texas sets.”

With this certification, Kappel becomes one of only 409 Board Certified Civil Appellate Law Lawyers in Texas, one of 870 Double Board Certified Lawyers in Texas, and one of only 11 lawyers Double Board Certified in Family Law and Civil Appellate Law.

A graduate of SMU Dedman School of Law, Kappel centers his practice on family law and appellate law. In addition to appellate work, Kappel’s family law practice focuses on matters with multijurisdictional and international issues, including advocating for parents involved in international child abduction cases under the Hague Convention and International Child Abduction Remedies Act.
