An unexpected incident on a United Airlines flight has led to a legal battle that could have significant implications for airline safety standards. On April 25, 2025, Antranique Wash filed a complaint in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, against United Airlines, Inc., alleging negligence after sustaining injuries from a falling panel during a flight.
According to the lawsuit filed by Antranique Wash, the incident occurred on November 15, 2023, when she was traveling as a ticketed passenger on a United Airlines flight from Chicago to Houston. Upon landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, a ceiling panel reportedly fell and struck her head. The complaint asserts that this accident resulted in severe personal injuries, including a concussion. The plaintiff claims that as an invitee on the aircraft—a business relationship beneficial to both parties—United Airlines owed her a duty of care which they breached by failing to maintain their aircraft safely.
The lawsuit accuses United Airlines of multiple acts of negligence. These include failing to maintain the airplane in safe condition, neglecting necessary repairs and warnings about potential hazards such as loose panels, and not implementing or enforcing adequate maintenance procedures. "Defendant owed a duty to ensure the safety of its invitees through the duration of their time within the airplane," states the petition. Furthermore, it alleges that these failures constitute negligence per se under Texas law.
Wash is seeking monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million for damages suffered due to the alleged negligence. The petition outlines various types of damages sought: physical pain and impairment, mental anguish, medical expenses, loss of earning capacity and enjoyment of life, consequential damages, and punitive damages. Additionally, Wash seeks prejudgment and post-judgment interest as well as court costs.
Representing Antranique Wash is attorney Anna J. McMullen from Amaro Law Firm located in Houston. The case is being presided over by judges at the 157th District Court with Case ID No. 100113827.
