A Tyler couple has sued Honda, alleging liability in a 2014 accident that left the husband injured.

Yuvonka Evette Lewis, individually and on behalf of her incapacitated spouse, Jesse Lewis, filed a lawsuit March 13 in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas against Honda Motor Co. and American Honda Motor Co. Inc., alleging product liability in connection with a 2014 motor vehicle accident.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 12, 2014, Jesse Lewis was driving a 2010 Honda Civic northbound on state Highway 110 when his vehicle struck a horse, left the road and hit a tree. The suit states although the plaintiff was wearing his seat belt and properly seated in the car, he sustained serious injuries.

Yuvonka Lewis alleges the car was not reasonably fit for possible accidents and Honda should have known of a safer design that would have prevented the injury. The suit states the vehicle lacked a safe roof, airbag and other safety systems and the defendants failed to conduct a thorough engineering analysis in designing and marketing the vehicle.

The plaintiffs allege pain, suffering, distress, anguish, loss of enjoyment of life and medical expenses.

The Lewises seek economic damages in excess of $75,000, plus prejudgment and post-judgment interest, attorney fees, expenses and costs. The couple is represented by attorneys E. Todd Tracy, Stewart Matthews and Andrew Counts of the Tracy Firm in Tyler.
