Hospital sues doctor over unpaid rent

A Jefferson County hospital claims a doctor has failed to pay it more than $8,000 for four months' rent.

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas filed a lawsuit Aug. 18 in Jefferson County District Court against James John Hughes III.

Baptist Hospitals claims it entered into a five-year lease contract with Hughes in which Hughes agreed to pay $2,582.90 per month in exchange for renting about 2,246 square feet of space.

On Aug. 1, 2007, Hughes signed another five-year lease agreement for $2,654.02 per month, according to the complaint.

Since signing the contracts, Hughes has breached them and failed to pay rent in March, April, May and June, the suit states.

Baptist Hospitals alleges breach of contract and breach of express warranties against Hughes.

In its complaint, Baptist Hospitals seeks an unspecified judgment, plus attorneys' fees, pre- and post-judgment interest at the highest legal interest rate and other relief the court deems just.

S. Donean Surratt of Orgain, Bell and Tucker in Beaumont will be representing it.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.

Jefferson County District Court case number: B187-609.
