Suit alleges driver failed to keep proper lookout

A Beaumont woman claims she incurred medical costs after a driver failed to keep a proper lookout and crashed into her vehicle.

Veronica Thompson filed a lawsuit Nov. 15 in Jefferson County District Court against Justin and Dorothy Burrell.

Thompson claims she drove on the access road of Highway 69 in Beaumont when Justin Burrell, who drove on the same road, failed to yield the right-of-way and struck her vehicle.

In addition to the medical costs she incurred, Thompson experienced physical pain, suffering, physical impairment and disfigurement and lost her earnings and her earning capacity, according to the complaint. In addition, she suffered property damages, the suit states.

Thompson blames Justin Burrell for causing the collision, saying he failed to maintain a proper lookout, drove too fast, failed to apply his brakes, failed to take evasive action and failed to yield the right-of-way.

She also named Dorothy Burrell as a defendant because she allowed Justin Burrell to drive her vehicle. Thompson claims Dorothy Burrell should have known Justin Burrell to be a reckless driver and a danger to others.

In her complaint, Thompson seeks a judgment within the jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre-judgment interest at the maximum rate allowed by law, post-judgment interest at the legal rate, costs and other relief the court deems just.

Thomas J. Burbank of Beaumont, John D. West of Beaumont and Scott Renick of the Law Offices of Scott Renick in Beaumont will be representing her.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
