45 companies named as defendants in asbestos suit

A lawsuit alleging Ernest D. Riley was negligently exposed to asbestos was filed against A.W. Chesterton, along with 44 other companies.

Riley filed the suit May 26 in Jefferson County District Court.

The other defendants named in the suit include Ametek Corp., Anco Insulation, Bechtel Corp., CBS Corp., Chevron USA, Cleaver Brooks, Crane Co., Crown, Cork and Seal Co., D&F Distributing, Dana Companies, E.I. DuPont, Flowserve Corp., ExxonMobil, Fluor Enterprises, Fluor Maintenance, Foster Wheeler Constructors, Foster Wheeler Corp., Foster Wheeler Energy, General Electric Corp., General Refractories Co., Goulds Pumps, Henry Vogt Machine Co., Hopeman Brothers Marine Interiors, Huntsman Petrochemical, IMO Industries, Industrial Holdings Corp., Ingersoll Rand, Metropolitan Life Insurance, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Nooter, Owens-Illinois, PPG Industries, Riley Power, Sepco Corp., Sterling Fluid Systems, Texaco, Treco Construction Services, Union Carbide Corp., Union Oil Company of California, Unocal Corp., Velan Valves, Viking Pump, Warren Pumps, Welco Manufacturing Co. and Zurn Industries.

Court records allege Riley was exposed to asbestos while working as a welder and pipefitter at the defendants' Jefferson County premises from 1956 until 1979.

"Defendants manufactured and/or sold and/or distributed asbestos-containing products which were unreasonably dangerous and defective," the suit states. "Such products were a producing cause of the injuries and damages suffered by the Plaintiff."

The plaintiff is suing for actual and exemplary damages, plus costs, pre- and post-jdugemnt interest at the legal rate and other relief the court deems just.

Provost Umphrey attorney Bryan Blevins Jr. represents the plaintiff.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
