The family of the late Augustine Aranda Sr. has filed an asbestos suit against the man's former employer, Atlantic Richfield, and two other companies.
Patsy Aranda and her children filed the suit Aug. 31 in Jefferson County District Court. Beazer East Inc. and BP Products North America are also named as defendants.
According to the lawsuit, Aranda was previously employed by Atlantic Richfield, where was exposed to asbestos dust and fibers. The suit does not give dates of employment.
"As a result of such exposure, Aranda developed ... asbestosis and lung cancer, for which he died a painful and terrible death on Nov. 13, 2010," the suit states.
The suit also alleges the defendants knew for decades that asbestos exposure caused cancer but still allowed employees to work with asbestos products.
The plaintiffs are suing for exemplary damages.
Attorney Keith Hyde of the Beaumont law firm Provost Umphrey represents them.
Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
