Mom claiming dog knocked son into ditch settles for $25K

A woman claiming a dog knocked her minor son into a ditch has settled with the canine's owner for $25,000.

Connie Purdy filed suit against area resident Melvin Portier on Dec. 30 in Jefferson County District Court, alleging the man's dog knocked her child into a ditch.

On March 17 a final judgment was entered in the case with Portier agreeing to pay the plaintiffs $25,000.

The court document states that $8,511.30 will be paid to Purdy and her attorneys; $5,728.07 will be used to pay a Medicaid lien; and $10,760.63 will be put in an interest bearing account for the minor plaintiff.

Court records show the incident occurred on May 31, 2009. However, the suit fails to state how the incident occurred or what type of injuries the minor plaintiff suffered.

The plaintiffs are represented by San Antonio attorney Paul Smith Jr.

Attorney Monica Wilkins represented Portier.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, presided over the case.
