Sales manager says furniture company fired him because of stroke

HOUSTON - A Harris County man is pursuing legal action after Furniture Brands International Inc. allegedly let him go because he suffered a stroke.

David Todd's lawsuit, filed Feb. 5 in Houston federal court, states that he worked for the defendant for almost 30 years and was a regional sales manager at the time of his termination.

According to the suit, Todd suffered a stroke on Aug. 16, 2010, which he claims left him physically impaired but did not cause cognitive impairment.

The plaintiff spent time recuperating and even told the respondent that he wanted to continue working, but Thomasville "steadfastly" refused, the original petition says.

According to the suit, the company did nothing to reasonably accommodate Todd's stroke-related disability, and instead fired him on March 22, 2011.

Todd asserts the termination was Thomasville's way of getting back at him for exercising his rights under the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.

Consequently, he seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

Attorney Scott Newar of Houston is representing the complainant.
