HOUSTON (Legal Newsline) – Thought to be a “super lawyer” by some groups, Houston attorney Steve Mostyn also doubles as a treasurer of a super PAC.
According to a Federal Ethics Commission report, Mostyn, founder of the Mostyn Law Firm, is the treasurer of former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords’ super PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions, which hauled in $12,486,335.57 in contributions last year.
Super PACs can raise unlimited sums of money from corporations, unions, and individuals; however, they are prohibited from coordinating directly with parties or candidates.
Americans for Responsible Solutions was formed last January, marking the second anniversary of the shooting in Tucson, Ariz.
In year’s time, the Mostyn Law Firm donated $750,000 to the organization, according to the FEC.
Mostyn’s political influence has expanded exponentially in recent years, as he continues to spend millions on Democratic candidates.
Most recently, on Dec. 31 the Mostyn Law Firm donated $1 million to the Texas Victory Committee – a joint project of Wendy R. Davis for Governor and Battleground Texas, according to the Texas Ethics Commission. Davis is a democrat running for governor, likely against current Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott.
According to the group’s website, Americans for Responsible Solutions is committed to commonsense policy that stops shootings while respecting the Second Amendment, such as:
- Criminal background checks;
- Limiting high capacity magazines;
- Limiting assault weapons;
- And stopping gun trafficking;
