Woman seeks $1M from insurer over denial of disability claim

A woman is suing an insurance company claiming she was denied benefits.


Cynthia Ann Bland filed a lawsuit April 2 in the Jefferson County District Court against Unum Life Insurance Company of America, citing breach of good faith and fair dealing, violation of Texas law, violation of Texas Deception Trade Practice Act, negligent handling of claims and breach of contract. 

The lawsuit states Bland had a claim for a disability for a back injury sustained while working for Walker County Appraisal District According to the suit, the claim had previously been accepted by the insurance company, but was then denied on May 13. Bland says she has appealed the case through the system.

According to the complaint, Bland alleges the insurance company has misrepresented her medical condition.

Bland is seeking damages in excess of $1 million.

She is being represented by John Werner of Reaud Morgan & Quinn LLP in Beaumont.
