HOUSTON – A consumer alleges a school district fraudulently misleads consumers into thinking they owe taxes that they do not owe.
Leatrice Nanette Carley filed a complaint on July 20 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Tomball Independent School District alleging violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that the defendant has sent her numerous tax bills in a business name.
"When plaintiff did not pay the bill, defendants sent the bill, which were actually made up taxes of a nonexistent company, to the plaintiff in the plaintiff's name using one of the plaintiff's private property addresses, thereby making the plaintiff believe that it was a valid debt," the suit states.
She alleges the defendant has threatened and harassed her with threats to "steal" her property and lawsuits. She also claims the defendants failed to validate the debt after she sent two requests.
The plaintiff seeks the return of all monies paid, costs of forensic accountant, penalties, costs and such other and additional relief as the court deems just and proper. She is representing herself.
