BEAUMONT – Earlier this month, a Jefferson County jury awarded a slip and fall plaintiff more than $115,000 in damages. On Sept. 13, she filed a motion for entry of final judgment on the verdict.

Seeking between $200,000 and $1 million in damages, Shelia Edwards filed suit Sept. 23, 2016 against MLHCK LLC, doing business as M&D Food Mart.

Two years earlier, on Oct. 15, 2014, Edwards entered the defendant's store in Port Arthur to purchase goods and services when she slipped and fell in a puddle of water from a leaking ice cream freezer.

The case went to trial on Sept. 3 and a verdict was returned the next day, court records show.

Jurors found M&D Food Mart 100 percent negligent for causing Edwards’ slip and fall injuries, awarding her $13,000 for her pain, $10,000 for mental anguish, $75,000 for impairment and $23,747.77 in medical expenses .

Edwards sustained injuries to her shoulder, neck and back that required invasive surgeries, resulting in physical and mental pain, disability and necessary medical care and treatment.

She alleged M&D Food Mart failed to warn her of the leaking water from the freezer and failed to maintain a safe premises.

She is represented by attorneys Mark C. Sparks of The Ferguson Law Firm and Michael A. Downey of Mostyn Law.

Judge Kent Walston, 58th District Court, is presiding over the case.
