Employees allege Southern Newspapers failed to pay proper overtime

HOUSTON —Two Angelina County women are suing a Houston newspaper company, they were not paid for overtime hours worked.

Sherry Gulley-Hudson and Samantha Hernandez filed a complaint Aug. 12 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Southern Newspapers Inc., and Jennifer Ricks, alleging violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

According to the complaint, Gulley-Hudson worked for Southern Newspapers from February 2018 to July 2019, and Hernandez worked for the defendant from September 2017 to March 2019. The plaintiffs allege they were regularly made to work more than 40 hours a week and work while off the clock. The suit states they were never compensated at the appropriate rate of 1 1/2 times their regular hourly pay as required by the FLSA.

Gulley-Hudson and Hernandez seek unpaid wages and liquidated damages, attorney fees, court costs and all other just and proper relief. They are represented by attorney Josh Sanford of Sanford Law Firm PLLC in Little Rock, Arkansas.
