HOUSTON — A Klein Independent School District (KISD) employee claims she was demoted and suffers from retaliation and a hostile work environment due to her age.

Theresa Cortney filed a complaint April 17 in the Harris County District Court against KISD alleging violation of the Texas Labor Code.

Cortney began working for the KISD in 2006 and most recently served as a special education transition coordinator. Cortney, who was more than 40 years-old at the time, alleges that on Aug. 10, 2017, she was demoted, received a pay cut and ordered to report to a person under 40 years of age.  Cortney claims her demotion was used to fill her position with a younger, less qualified person.

Cortney seeks monetary relief, trial by jury, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Todd Slobin and Melinda Arbuckle of Shellist Lazarz Slobin LLP in Houston.
