OMI Environmental faces suit by crew member injured in explosion on one of their vessels

HOUSTON — OMI Environmental is facing a suit by a crew member who was injured during an explosion in the engine room of one of its vessels. 

Gary Jones filed a complaint March 30 in the Harris County District Court against Oil Mop LLC doing business as OMI Environmental Solutions alleging negligence under the Jones Act and other claims. 

Jones was working aboard a vessel owned and operated by OMI as a member of its crew on Oct. 14, 2019. He alleges he was sitting on a cooler on top of the access doors to the engine compartment when there was a sudden explosion. Jones claims he was thrown 10 feet into the air and suffered injuries including to his back, neck, leg, and foot. He alleges the vessel was unseaworthy with OMI failing to properly maintain vessel and its equipment. 

Jones seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest and all other just relief. He is represented by Marcus Spagnoletti and Eric Rhine of The Spagnoletti Law Firm in Houston.
