SAN ANTONIO – Attorney Martin Phipps has started a new law firm with T.J. Mayes, the former chief of staff for Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolf.
Phipps of Phipps Mayes is one of the attorneys representing Bexar County in its opioid suit. Back in June, the county snubbed a proposed statewide settlement. The county, which hopes to reap $1 billion in damages from its opioid suit, would have received around $7 million from the settlement.
The recent shuffling of attorneys at Phipps Deacon Purnell raises some questions, such as why is the firm fracturing with so much money on the line?
As previously reported, two former partners at Phipps Deacon Purnell (Daniel Griffin and Simon Purnell) ditched the firm back in December to form Griffin Purnell.
What’s strange is the Phipps Deacon Purnell website still lists Purnell and Griffin as partners.
In fact, the site still lists Phipps as a partner at the firm.
Phipps has been making headlines for sometime.
Last November, The Record reported on documents showing Phipps may have made “straw man” donations through a former employee facing criminal charges.
Around the same time, litigation between Phipps and some former Phipps Deacon Purnell employees was heating up. The former employees allegedly held on to passwords and login credentials for the firm’s computers.
