HOUSTON – The 14th Court of Appeals affirmed the dismissal of discrimination suit brought against Houston ISD today.

The suit was brought by Margaret Fields, an African American. Fields worked for HISD as a substitute teacher and wanted to become a full-time teacher, so she enrolled in district’s alternative-certification program.

Court records show Fields began experiencing performance issues early in her internship and failed to improve. Fields was not recommended to become fully certified.

On Jan. 7, 2016, Fields filed a charge of discrimination with the EEOC and Texas Workforce Commission, alleging age and race discrimination.

In December 2018, a trial court granted the district’s plea to the jurisdiction and an appeal followed, court records show.

Appeal case No. 14-19-00010-CV
