HOUSTON – Once a powerhouse, the Mostyn Law Firm now seems to be struggling to pay its taxes, as records show a delinquent tax lien has been issued against the firm.
Records obtained from Harris County show the lien amount at $2,666.75 - $536.16 of which is from interest. The period of liability is for 2020.
Prior to his suicide in 2017, Steve Mostyn built Mostyn Law into a widely recognized law firm specializing in insurance litigation, reaping hundreds of millions in dollars by filing hundreds to thousands of lawsuits every time a natural disaster stuck.
Mostyn gained notoriety by using his attorney’s fees to fund Democratic candidates across the state of Texas and on the national stage.
However, a month after his passing, Mostyn’s widow, Amber, shutdown the firm’s Beaumont and Austin offices. The layoffs came right before Christmas.
Currently, Mostyn Law has shifted its focus to commercial vehicle litigation.
“Mostyn Law is a truly unique law firm, sharply focused on obtaining justice for truck wreck victims,” the firm’s website states. “Mostyn Law’s attorneys help victims involved in commercial truck accidents, from box trucks to big rigs.”
The firm’s site lists a number to call at the top of the page: 1-800 TRUCK WRECK.
According to the Texas Office of Court Administration, motor vehicle litigation has increased 118 percent in Texas since 2008, while other types of personal injury litigation have decreased.
Much like it did when lawsuits against insurance companies spiked, the Texas Legislature is considering legislation this session seeking to end abusive suits against owners and operators of commercial vehicles in Texas.
