HOUSTON — A husband claims Spring Hospital physicians failed to recognize and treat her internal bleeding after hernia surgery which led to her death.

Rod A. Henderson, individually and as the representative of the Estate of Carol W. Henderson filed a complaint Aug. 12 in Harris County District Court against Irfan Ibrahim Wadiwala, D.O., Atif Shahzad, M.D., and North Houston Surgical Hospital LLC doing business as Spring Hospital alleging wrongful death and negligence.

Carol Henderson underwent surgery for hernia repair at Spring Hospital on Aug. 10, 2020, which was peformed by Wadiwala and Shahzad, according to the suit. The plaintiff alleges that following the surgery, his wife developed hypotension, dizziness, agitation, altered mental status and difficulty breathing and showed signs of internal bleeding. He claims that nothing was done for his wife for over an hour and a half when she became unresponsive and was transferred to Houston Northwest Medical Center.

The plaintiff further claims during his wife's transfer, she lost pulses and CRR resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and that an autopsy report showed blood in her abdominal cavity. The plaintiff alleges his wife's death was due to the defendants' lack of proper post-operative care and failure to recognize and manage her internal bleeding.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Michael Watson and Gabe Sassin of Hilliard Martinez Gonzales LLP in Corpus Christi.
