HOUSTON — An engineer claims an oil covered staircase at a drill site caused his fall.

Neal Smothers filed a complaint Aug. 28 in Harris County District Court against Scandrill Inc., alleging negligence.

According to his complaint, Smothers was working for Upstream International as a MUD engineer at a drill site operated by Scandrill on July 20, 2022. He claims that he slipped down stairs that were covered in oil and suffered serious injuries to his ankle and other parts of his body. Smothers alleges Scandrill's negligence for failing to provide a safe work environment, failing to have adequate safety equipment and for not inspecting the work site.

He also alleges Scandrill failed to fix or warn of the dangerous condition and did not follow applicable government regulations. Smothers claims as a result of his slip and fall he also suffered impairment, mental anguish, lost earnings and incurred medical expenses.

Smothers seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Jason Itkin and Trenton Shelton of Arnold & Itkin LLP in Houston.
