GALVESTON — A Galveston Independent School District teacher alleges she suffered a hostile work environment.
Maureen Hayman filed a complaint June 14 in Galveston County District Court against Galveston Independent School District (GISD) alleging retaliation and other claims.
Hayman, according to her complaint, is a disabled U.S. Airforce veteran who became a school teacher with the GISD for 10 years. She claims that during her time working for the GISD, she raised concerns about the hostile work environment that including sexual harassment from her supervisor.
She further claims that she brought her concerns directly to the GISD superintendent who ignored her complaints about the hostile work environment. Hayman alleges in August of 2022, she again complained about the hostile work environment and was told her complaints "were not valid," and that just three days after complaining, she was reassigned and was not given her disability accommodations.
She claims her reassignment and the GISD's failure to investigate her hostile work environment and provide her with accommodations violates the Texas Commission on Human Rights Act and caused her to lose Texas retirement plan contributions and benefits.
Hayman seeks monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. They are represented by Charles Dunkel, Jr., and Ashley Thomson of Thomas Dunkel Law PLLC in League City.
