HOUSTON — A Hispanic teacher at a Houston private school alleges she was denied accommodations and terminated due to race and in retaliation over workers' compensation claim.

Maria J. Torres-Calle filed a complaint June 19 in Harris County District Court against The Fay School alleging discrimination, workers compensation retaliation and other claims.

The plaintiff, a Hispanic woman from Spain, was a Spanish teacher at The Fay School. She claims that on March 4, 2022, she was walking on the school premises when she suffered "severe trauma" to her ankle. The plaintiff alleges she was forced to take PTO due to her work-related injury and was refused her request to work from home.

She further alleges The Fay School refused to accommodate her doctors' orders and offer her easily available parking near her classroom or allowing her to attend doctor and physical therapy appointments. The plaintiff claims she was treated differently than other teachers because of her race and that the school revoked her teaching contract in retaliation for her discrimination complaints and on-the-job injury.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief, interest , trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by. Laura Hernandez of Monty & Ramirez LLP in Houston.
