A Houston apartment complex is being sued for more than $1 million and is being accused of negligence after a shooting that occurred in connection with a robbery outside a tenant’s home.

Braylon Monroe and Brion Nicks filed a complaint Aug. 12 against Globix Sunset Crossing, LLC doing business as Sunset Crossing Apartments and
John Doe(s) in the 165th District Court of Harris County, TX. The complaint states that on the morning of Aug. 5, Monroe was robbed at gunpoint by one or more unknown assailants outside the apartment he shared with plaintiff Brion Nicks and their two children. Nicks, sleeping in the back room, was jolted awake by the sound of gunshots. The complaint says she rushed to the front entryway to find Monroe sinking to his knees and bleeding from the back of his
head.

“As a result, the plaintiffs suffered significant and traumatic injuries,” the filing reads. The plaintiffs claim the apartment complex’s ownership and management neglected to provide sufficient security measures as were warranted by a history of violent crime in the community around the complex."

The plaintiffs ask for damages for Monroe for past and future pain and suffering, severe and permanent, and economic damages, exemplary and
punitive. They also make a bystander claim for Nicks, asking compensation for past and future pain and mental anguish; medical expenses; lost earnings; physical incapacity and disability; and loss of enjoyment of life. They also seek interest, court costs, and any other just relief.

The plaintiffs are represented by Major L. Adams, II of the Law Office of Major L. Adams, II in Houston.
