The University of Houston Law Center earned four distinctions in the National Jurist’s preLaw Magazine Winter 2024 edition, with a notable placement on the cover for having one of the country’s Best Law School Buildings.
In addition to having an A-rated facility, the University of Houston Law Center was recognized as one of the nation’s Most Diverse Law Schools, Best Schools for Asian Students, and its trial advocacy program received an A-rating.
In the Winter edition, preLaw Magazine said it honored, “buildings that give off special vibes, through both their appearance and their functionality. These buildings have great aesthetics, lots of space and outstanding amenities.”
“I think our building is a trailblazer,” UH Law Center Dean Leonard M. Baynes said in the magazine. “The building is really a testament to our wide representation of alumni of all backgrounds, our city and our state.”
Tyler J. Brewster, University of Houston Law Center 3L, told the magazine, “My favorite spot in the (new) building is the outdoor patio on the 3rd floor – when it’s not 100+ degrees in Houston, you can find me out there having lunch or doing homework. From the patio, you have a great view of the Houston skyline.”
In a separate article, Baynes was also quoted for his expertise in legal academia. The publication reported that 340 legal professionals were introduced to the legal profession by initiatives established by Baynes, including the Law Center’s Pre-Law Pipeline Program.
“Everybody starts at a different place,” Baynes said. “But you, as a student, have the keys to change your trajectory. After we give you the tools, you can do something. “Even if the students don’t go to your law school, you don’t know how you will intersect in the future. You never give to get back. But when you do good things, good things sometimes happen for your institution.”
The Law Center’s trial advocacy programs house the Blakely Advocacy Institute and A.A. White Dispute Resolution Center, the Law Center’s mock trial, moot court and alternative dispute resolution teams and annually hosts the Hunton Andrews Kurth Moot Court National Championship. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Law Center No. 24 in Trial Advocacy for 2024.
