Steel company alleges maritime shipping business damaged cargo

HOUSTON – A German steel and technology company with offices in Houston is suing a shipping business, alleging damaged cargo. 

Salzgitter Mannesmann International filed a lawsuit Jan. 7 against M/V Island Mariner, Lynx Shipping Co., Clipper Steel Services LTD. and Siomar Enterprises LTD in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas, alleging negligence and breach of contract.

According to the complaint, on Dec. 20, 2014, at a port in Belgium, the Island Mariner received cargo in good condition and it then was transported the port of Houston.

When the cargo arrived in the Port of Houston, the lawsuit says, the merchandise was contaminated by seawater and physically damaged, causing monetary damages to the plaintiff of at least $230,650.

Salzgitter Mannesmann International seeks the monetary damages, plus interest and legal costs. It is represented by attorney Dana K. Martin of Hill Rivkins LLP in Houston.
