Plaintiff reaps 300K verdict following JC auto collision trial

Car accident 40

BEAUMONT – A Corpus Christi resident recently cleared nearly $300,000 in damages awarded by a Jefferson County jury following an automobile collision trial.

Seeking up to $1 million in damages, Jesus Pena filed suit against Royce Perkins and Rolando Torres on Sept. 21 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the original petition, on Jan. 24, 2015, Pena was in the inside lane traveling south on Twin City Highway in Nederland when Perkins allegedly failed to yield the right of way and turned south onto the road and was rear-ended by Torres, who allegedly failed to control his rate of speed.

As a result, Perkins’ vehicle slammed into Pena’s and caused it to rollover.

The case was called up for trial on April 30 and ended May 2.

Jurors found both Perkins and Torres negligent, assigning the majority of the blame to Perkins (80 percent), according to the charge of the court.

The jury awarded Pena $24,706.11 for medical expenses, $3,500 for lost earnings, $100,000 for past and future mental anguish, and $171,000 for past and future impairment.

Judge Kent Walston, 58th District Court, is presiding over the case.
