A shocking incident at a Houston workplace has led to a major lawsuit against a prominent corporation. On June 17, 2024, Billy Reid filed a complaint in the Harris County District Court against Powell Industries, Inc., alleging severe negligence that resulted in significant injuries.

According to the complaint, on June 6, 2024, Billy Reid was performing his usual duties at Powell Industries' Houston location when an employee began recklessly throwing pieces of metal from the ceiling onto the floor. Tragically, one of these metal pieces, weighing approximately 20 pounds, struck Reid on the head while he was on a ladder. The impact caused serious injuries including a large gash on his face, broken safety glasses, and damage to his hard hat. Reid required immediate medical attention and sustained major injuries to his neck, back, and face as a result of this incident.

Reid's legal team argues that Powell Industries failed in multiple aspects of their duty of care. The lawsuit lists numerous points of negligence including failing to recognize and mitigate hazards, participating in unsafe practices that led to the incident, not providing timely assistance or ensuring protective measures were in place, and neglecting proper equipment maintenance. Furthermore, it accuses Powell Industries of failing to enforce safety policies and adequately train their personnel. The plaintiff claims these failures directly contributed to his injuries.

The complaint goes beyond simple negligence; it also accuses Powell Industries of gross negligence. It states that the company’s actions involved an extreme degree of risk given the potential harm they posed. Despite being aware of these risks, Powell Industries allegedly proceeded with conscious indifference towards the safety and welfare of its employees. This reckless disregard for safety protocols forms the basis for seeking punitive damages.

Billy Reid is seeking compensation for physical pain and suffering (both past and future), disfigurement and physical impairment (both past and future), mental anguish, medical expenses, and loss of earning capacity (both past and future). Due to what is described as egregious behavior by Powell Industries, Reid is asking for not less than $1 million in damages. Additionally, he requests post-judgment interest at the maximum legal rate along with court costs.

Representing Billy Reid are attorneys Anthony G. Buzbee and Christopher J. Leavitt from The Buzbee Law Firm based in Houston. The case has been assigned Case ID 2024-38274 in Harris County District Court under Judge Patricia Jones.
