In a dramatic legal confrontation, a Louisiana resident has filed a lawsuit against a Texas-based construction company following a catastrophic incident aboard a maritime vessel. On April 10, 2025, James Stigall lodged his complaint in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, accusing Laredo Construction, Inc. of negligence under the Jones Act and general maritime law. The case revolves around an explosion and fire on the M/V Brazos lift boat that resulted in severe injuries to Stigall.

The plaintiff, James Stigall, was employed by Production and Technology Services, Inc., and was working aboard the M/V Brazos on August 11, 2024. According to the petition, while making his way to the data station on the vessel operated by Laredo Construction under a charter agreement, Stigall heard an explosion-like sound followed by flames erupting across multiple locations on deck. As he attempted to extinguish the fire with a foam-wheeled extinguisher, it exploded, covering him in foam and causing him to ingest it. This incident led to significant physical and emotional injuries including gastrointestinal complications and anxiety.

Stigall's lawsuit accuses Laredo Construction of multiple counts of negligence such as failing to maintain a safe work environment aboard the vessel, inadequately maintaining equipment like fire extinguishers, failing to train and supervise crew members properly, not implementing adequate safety procedures or providing necessary safety equipment. Furthermore, Stigall alleges that Laredo Construction is liable for operating an unseaworthy vessel due to faulty equipment and unsafe conditions.

The plaintiff seeks monetary relief exceeding $1 million for damages incurred from physical pain, mental anguish, disfigurement, loss of enjoyment of life as well as future medical expenses. Additionally, he demands punitive damages if it's proven that Laredo Construction's denial of maintenance and cure benefits was arbitrary or willful. He argues that Laredo Construction’s conduct showed conscious indifference towards safety standards which justifies exemplary damages.

Represented by attorney M. Paul Skrabanek from Pierce Skrabanek PLLC law firm based in Houston Texas; Stigall is determined to hold Laredo Construction accountable for their alleged negligence under both state laws and federal maritime regulations outlined within this case (Case ID: 2025-25256). The case will be presided over by judges from Harris County’s 151st Judicial District Court where it has been filed seeking justice through trial proceedings.
