In a gripping legal battle unfolding in Harris County, Texas, a woman is taking on a prominent medical institution and its staff over alleged negligence during a surgical procedure. Sarah J. Gogia filed a complaint on January 9, 2025, against Webster Surgical Specialty Hospital Ltd, operating as Houston Physicians Hospital, along with Dr. Michael Sieling, Dr. Shafraz J. Mohammed, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Kelly Ferguson.
The case stems from an incident on January 10, 2023, when Gogia underwent surgery to address pelvic floor prolapse at the hospital. According to the complaint filed in the District Court of Harris County, Gogia claims that post-surgery she experienced significant upper extremity weakness—a condition she attributes to improper positioning during anesthesia administration by Dr. Sieling and CRNA Ferguson. Despite her complaints post-operation, hospitalist Dr. Mohammed allegedly dismissed her symptoms as psychogenic rather than addressing them medically.
Gogia's lawsuit accuses the defendants of breaching their duty of care through negligence and failing to properly treat her nerve damage caused by the surgical procedure's positioning errors. She argues that this breach was the proximate cause of her injuries and has led to ongoing physical pain and suffering, impairment, loss of income, and diminished quality of life.
The plaintiff seeks various forms of relief from the court including actual damages for her injuries, pre-judgment and post-judgment interest on all awarded damages, costs incurred during litigation, and any other equitable relief deemed appropriate by the court.
Represented by attorney Rick Barrera from Barrera Law Group in Odessa, Texas (Bar No: 240682725), Gogia is calling for accountability from those she believes responsible for her suffering. The case is being heard under Case ID 2025-01825 in the 113th Judicial District Court with Judge Wanda Chambers presiding.
