A Harris County resident has filed a lawsuit against a local grocery store chain, alleging negligence that led to serious personal injuries. Maria Renteria lodged the complaint in the District Court of Harris County on September 12, 2024, accusing Sellers Bros. Inc. of maintaining dangerous conditions on their premises.
According to the court documents, Renteria was injured on April 17, 2023, while shopping at Sellers Bros. Inc., located at 10901 Market Street in Houston, Texas. The plaintiff claims she slipped and fell due to a liquid substance on the floor, which she alleges was a direct result of the defendant's failure to maintain safe conditions. "Plaintiff's bodily injuries occurred as a direct result of a fall that was proximately caused by the dangerous condition described above," reads the petition.
Renteria argues that Sellers Bros. Inc., also known as Sellers Brothers #10, should have been aware of the hazardous condition and taken steps to rectify it or warn customers. The lawsuit accuses the company of several acts of negligence including failing to inspect and maintain the flooring area properly, permitting a dangerous condition to exist, and not providing adequate warnings about the unsafe state of the floor. "Defendant negligently permitted the floor to become slippery... and failed to warn Plaintiff of the condition," states Renteria’s complaint.
The plaintiff is seeking monetary relief amounting to less than $250,000 for medical expenses, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of consortium, and other damages related to her injuries. Additionally, Renteria requests exemplary damages for what she describes as Sellers Bros. Inc.'s conscious indifference to her safety and well-being.
Represented by Oyinda Adeyekun from Adey Law Firm PLLC in Sugar Land, Texas, Renteria has requested a jury trial for this case. The case has been assigned Case ID 2024-61915 and will be heard in Harris County's 190th Judicial District Court with Judge Gerardo Perez presiding.
